No matter where you are in the world, Friday is Friday and it’s hard to get anything done. I spent most of the day back at the Church View House working on the masonry crew. Working on the craft-side of a historic preservation project really opens my eyes to writing specifications and how hard it is to put a building back together. There is a reason why these building materials and crafts are historic, because they are hard, time consuming and require a lot of skill. The disconnect between the academic side of preservation and the practical construction side is hard to ignore when you’re mixing mortar and trying not to get too much lime on the back of your neck! If anything I have gained a much better appreciation and respect for anyone who works on the construction/build side of any preservation project.
