What a way to start! Our first event with the Falmouth Heritage Renewal was at Good Hope Plantation deep in the hills of the Trelawny Parish. One of the few surviving great houses in the region, Good Hope helps capture the local history and serves as a prime example of the sugar cane industry that made Jamaica one of the jewels of the British Empire. Good Hope also played host to the annual lime burn, the traditional process of burning limestone to create dehydrated lime for the mortar. Pretty fun to watch the lighting of the rick, kind of like a sacrificial funeral pyre for rocks….
Anyway, the lush mountainous forests made for a great atmosphere for the event as the Martha Brie River flowed by the old water wheel and sugar cane procession plant and historic structures. It was definitely time for a dip in the river.
