Yep, tourist towns can be pretty bad. We did take in some culture first and visited Sam Sharp Square. Sam Sharp is one of the National Heroes here in Jamaica and led one of the largest slave rebellions. Sadly, the square is pretty run down and in bad shape. Next it was off to the famed Hip Strip – Margaritaville and the Jamaican Bobsled CafĂ© – All were about as good as they sound! At least the resort was a nice escape with sandy beaches and air conditioning.
On the way back we stopped at another great house – the infamous Rose Hall. At least infamous for its interpretation & tour that relies more on good local legends and story telling than any historic evidence or facts… Poor Annie Palmer doomed to go down in history as the White Witch of Rose Hall. The real highlight is finding out that it’s near to Johnny Cash’s Jamaican retreat – Cinnamon Hill. Sorry Janice, this little nugget of historic trivia definitely made the whole tour worthwhile….
