Where do you stay when you are a rich planter in Jamaica in the late 1800’s? Well you build your own house right on the wharf so you can keep a careful eye on all your business and the local trade. So it is with the Tharp House. This large residency is actually the town house of John Tharp who owned and operated the Good Hope Plantation we visited last week. The house is in pretty bad shape and looks more like a termite ranch than a classical Georgian house, but give the folks at Falmouth Heritage Renewal some time and see what happens. We will be spending the next few days documenting the hardware on the windows and shutters at the house. Basically, doing an inventory and photographing all the hinges and locks so they can be reproduced for this major effort in rehabilitation.
