What would you do if you returned to Jamaica?

Meat and an open flame

Sunday – July 4, 2010

Happy 4th of July, and what better way to celebrate than a BBQ – well in Jamaica that would have to be a visit to Boston Bay and the Portland Jerk Festival. Clinton, the shop manager here at Falmouth Heritage Renewal, invited me to go along and check out the east end of the country and attend this world famous festival. Port Antonio was once the banana capitol of the world at the height of the United Fruit Company monopoly at the turn of the century and was Errol Flynn’s favorite get away, but today it is the site of all things Jerk. We got there a little early and headed down for a quick tour of the famous blue lagoon where a few James Bond movies were filmed and then it was off to Boston Bay where Jerk cooking originated. Seeing this traditional form of BBQ in full swing was probably the culinary highlight of the trip. Sorry Tony but, I’ve never seen that much meat cooking anywhere in the world. INCREDIBLE and delicious, thanks Clinton. What a great way to celebrate the 4th.
